HISTORICAL AND NORMATIVE DYNAMICS OF THE IDEA OF MORAL AUTONOMY

Рубен Грантович Апресян, Ruben Apressyan

Abstract

In the Russian philosophical literature the concept of autonomy is usually presented in the Kantian version. More over this concept is associated with rare exception exclusively with Kant. Meanwhile, Kant's conceptual approach to morality as autonomy became possible owing to elaboration of this idea not only during the previous few centuries of Modern philosophy, but through the whole history of the Western thought. The idea of autonomy is rooted in it and it is not that very idea which Kant put forward. In the current philosophy the Kantian concept of autonomy has been considered as a particular version and the discourse of autonomy has been changed owing to extension of the subject matter of moral philosophy, which has addressed to the issues of human activity, biomedical practice, social equity, etc. However, the conceptual continuum of autonomy elaborated in the Modern philosophy has mainly maintained its framework, which is set up, from the one hand, by the ideas of independence from external coersion, individual self-sufficiency, and unaccountability and from the other — by the ideas of arbitrariness prevention and normative restriction aimed to support the moral agent in outdoing his/her onliness and universal self-determination towards others.
